Amish Road Rage
I live in a very rural area surrounded by several Amish farms on roads with high speed limits. The Amish are wonderful neighbors and I love living in the area. They are quiet, keep their farms organized and are considerate of others. In the distance the sheep and cows softly bah and moo. Every day I get to hear the rhythmic clip clop of their horses’ shoes on the pavement as they ride by my house. It’s relaxing in a way. It was a pleasure to meet them when they were selling goods by the road. They are friendly and a pleasure with whom to talk. I find it quite humorous when, occasionally, a horse and carriage will suddenly pull out of a driveway shrouded with woods. As a driver I have to pass them quickly and carefully or wait and slow down to 15 mph before passing if we are on a hill. One day I was out for a plein air excursion, driving down a hill, approaching a farm. In the driveway was a horse and carriage waiting to exit. The carriage driver could clearly see me coming at the 60 miles per hour the speed limit allows. He made the decision to pull out in front of me anyway. There were no other cars on the road so I decided to go around him. The driver was trying to get the horse to go as quickly as possible. As I passed, softball size horse shit balls came flying at my truck, hitting it. I don’t know if they came from the horse’s rear end or the balls were ready made from the carriage. I doubt the latter. Some of the balls were kicked around more by the horses feet. I could only chuckle at the thought that it might be some form of road rage.
